My name is Zach, a second year GS student from USA.
I lived in the US for the first 18 years of my life, then lived in Vietnam for 2 years, and have been living in the Netherlands since late 2020.
I identify with western culture most but I learned a lot during the time I lived in Asia and consider myself to be quite open and adaptable to other cultures. I appreciate the warmness of people in Asia and the focus on relationships and understanding.
How would you reflect back on your experience with Global Studies?
I like the international focus of Global Studies and the emphasis on understanding different perspectives. I like the fact that we have a diverse student body, although, I think it would be better if we had additional students from the Global South. However, I don't think Global Studies has a eurocentric approach. We seem to have a larger focus on the Global South, which is good, but we also incorporate some European views. A lot of the literature also comes from studies conducted in the US as well.
Why the Netherlands?
I decided to do my studies in the Netherlands because I prefer to live in Europe, and because the cost of education in the Netherlands is cheaper than in my home country. Also, there are more international opportunities in Europe and the Netherlands in general.
